• The new season of "Burn Notice" that starts on Thursday (even if I won't be able to watch it until Friday)
• Best Buy selling season 4 of "Stargate Atlantis" for $35 (surprisingly cheaper than every place else)
• The good food that's sure to be at the family picnic on Saturday (that reminds me, I need to make the rolls on Friday)
• The fact that since it's after the 4th of July, it's officially summer here in Seattle

Nope, I'm not talking Camus.  I'm talking Tarsem.

Last night I went with a friend of mine to see The Fall, a movie done by Tarsem Singh, the maker of The Cell.  Now, I wasn't a huge fan of The Cell, beautiful movie but weird as hell, and I wasn't really all that good at analyzing movies at the time, so I didn't get much out of it.

For this movie though, I had high hopes.  Why?  It has the same sort of surreal and fantastical look to it, but the story is very straightforward and beautiful.  The real world half of the story may have been a little predictable, but I forgive that because of how emotional it was.  My friend complained of being hit over the head with the message, but I think it really worked.

The movie centers around a little immigrant girl named Alexandria who has fallen and broken her arm and is staying at a hospital.  The movie follows her, and everything is seen basically from her perspective.  By chance she meets a man at the hospital, Pushing Daisies' Lee Pace, who has also fallen and injured himself.  He starts telling her a story about five bandits who are out to kill the evil Governor Odius.  What she doesn't know is that he's using the story to manipulate her into helping him.

The problem is that what he wants to do is kill himself.  Obviously he doesn't tell her that, but all the adults know he is suicidal.  There is a lot of talk of suicide and that's why my friend felt like she was being hit over the head with it.  But the reason I think it worked was because we were supposed to be seeing things through Alexandria.  And when you are a child dealing with issues way to adult for you to comprehend, no amount of hearing about them is going to make you understand.  You're slightly aware of these words and feelings floating around in some space, but it doesn't make sense and you kind of just keep chugging along kind of blindly.

At least, that's how my childhood often felt.

If this had been merely a story of how the light of a child saves the life of a man in despair, it would have been boring.  But it's much more complex than that.  It's almost more about her than it is about him.  I think it was a brilliant movie and was worth going to see.  If you don't get this in time to catch it in theaters, make sure you get a hold of it when it comes out on DVD.

Not to mention, the movie was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, especially the way it wove the real world into the imaginary one with incredible tact and beauty.

Dolly

Dolly Parton, who I went to see on Sunday at the O2... where she played 2 nights.. some quite interesting outfits (in the audience), a lot of strange cowboy type get-ups,, housewives from Brockley who wished they were in the Smoky Mountains, a few line dancer types, a number of gays, a big variety of age groups, some comfy padded waistcoats and thermals, but mainly 20,000 adoring fans, and not without reason, this was one of the most inspiring shows I had ever seen. Firstly the sound and band were immaculate, real Nashville ‘top-of-the-line’ musicians & backing singers, these people ‘rocked’! This woman is one monster talent, the songs and vocals were just ‘out-of-this-world’, I spent most of the gig with my mouth wide open in disbelief at how good it was... you wouldn’t have to be a fan to be taken in by this monster talent, brilliant songs and her absolute raw ability. This is a woman who makes charisma look effortless, something I could only draw parallels with perhaps seeing Elvis in the 50’s. She even managed to make her new single sound vibrant and raw, (shame the actual record is engulfed in 80’s production). The lengthy talks between songs were both endearing and revealing, I am sure she has reeled it all off before on numerous occasions, but she makes you feel like you’re in her den back in the Smoky Mountains,,, songs like Jolene and Little Sparrow had me bawling tears... 10 out of 10.. forget the hair, plastic surgery and glitzy outfits, this woman exudes pure talent from every pore of her body,.. sublime

Must say I like the O2 policy of taking water in,.. they let you take it in, but you have to remove the lid (???!!), quite what this is about I can’t fathom, I am presuming that if you decide to bottle the artist that you have spent £100. going to see they have decided that some of the liquid may leave the bottle by the time it hits the stage, thus reducing the collateral damage that a small plastic bottle of water may cause... but more likely is that most people can’t carry around a bottle without a lid with the array of coats, handbags and other stuff they have to take with them, then the O2 can sell you water at inflated prices once you’re in there, ‘rip-off’ ****’*... hence the huge number of stalls selling water at inflated prices once your in there... why not just have done with it and turn up the heating while your at it !

I pulled a muscle in my back today, so I decided to watch a movie since I couldn't move.

I've watched a couple movies since my last post, but haven't really been floored enough to post about them.  This movie, however, was fantastic.  It's been sitting there for a while waiting for me to watch it, but I was almost scared to because I've heard so many good reviews.  I wanted to wait for a perfect time so I could really appreciate it.  Well, other than the sharp pain from my back, today was the day.  I wish I hadn't waited so long!
What a beautifully-sad movie!  It was fantastically done and that trick from the beginning (I won't mention it) really threw me for a loop. 
I've seen a trend in a few movies that I've watched.  The bad guys are the ones who spoil the peace processes between India and Pakistan or have set prejudices against the other, etc.  The 'heroes' are always the ones that overcome the boundaries that are there.  Now, I obviously can't comment on the attitudes of young people in India and Pakistan, but I imagine that the presence of these sentiments in the movies reflect the ideals of most people, otherwise they wouldn't threaten their blockbuster by putting that in there.  It would be nice to see a new generation that can bring peace. 
But those are hardly ever the ones in power, are they?
Anyway, I highly, highly recommend this movie.  The story was fantastic, the songs were beautiful and not obnoxious and it was just a wonderful movie.  In a happy/sad sort of way :) 
This is going on my list of favourites.  It is one of those that can be classified as a new classic, if that makes sense.

Now, it doesn't really seem to stack up after watching Veer-Zaara, but this was a cute movie.  It was fun to watch and a cute, feel-good romance.   Don't really let that put you off, because, overall that may have been what it can be described as, it also has a lot of real-life elements.  That is what the story is about in fact, the inside and result of a 'perfect' fairy-tale like love story.  Where there is love, there is pain I guess.
It isn't overly sappy, and isn't overly emotional (like Devdas, or Kal Ho Naa Ho, or even Veer Zaara), so it is one that can be watched anytime and many times.  In my opinion :)

Just heard that it the amount of corn it takes to generate the biofuel needed to fill up an SUV would feed someone in Africa (or anywhere that matter) for an entire year.  Holy shit.  That's just incredible.  AND we're not even using biofuel in any true capacity in the good ol' us of a.

I also ate an ear of corn this weekend, which had been grilled over the permanent bbq grill fixture at the Tahoe car camping site we frequented for the holiday.  It was my first experience with "car" camping, and it is pretty much as far as you can get from the actual concept of camping and still include a tent.  Every site had an RV (and a little tent set up for the screaming brats), a grill, a fire pit, close access to bathrooms and showers, an awesome view of the family at the next site, and the ever present noise of the four-lane road we all arrived in on. Odd, to say the least. But all this was not nearly as annoying migraine I received from breathing the smoke from BOTH neighbors campfire remnants as they slept in their huge recreational vehicles.
